Off The Wall Framing is on the Princes Highway strip in Rockdale, in Sydney's St George district, a short walk from Rockdale railway station. It's an easy stop for anyone travelling the highway between Kogarah, Arncliffe and Banksia, and just as convenient coming up from Brighton-Le-Sands, Sans Souci or Ramsgate to the south. Street parking is available directly out front. Off The Wall Framing opens Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 4:30pm, and Saturday, 10am to 4pm, and is closed on Sundays.

Off The Wall Framing's own business is custom picture framing, canvas printing and photo restoration, so once your photos are scanned it's worth asking about getting a favourite print reframed, printed onto canvas or restored while you're in the shop. If you're wary of AI touching family photos, here's exactly what happens: the equipment photographs each page from several different light angles and reassembles the clean pixels to remove glare and reflection, then runs that image through separate capture, colour and dust-correction, and cropping and rotation steps. None of it is generative. Nothing is invented or altered in the picture, so what you get back is a faithful digital copy of the original print.

Rockdale and neighbouring Brighton-Le-Sands have been shaped for well over a century by people arriving from somewhere else. Brighton-Le-Sands began as tramway pioneer Thomas Saywell's "New Brighton" estate from 1885, once the railway reached Rockdale the year before, and through the twentieth century the suburbs around it, including Brighton-Le-Sands, Banksia, Bardwell Park and Kyeemagh, attracted a substantial number of Southern European migrants, part of the broader wave of families who settled across Sydney's south after the Second World War. That history hasn't stopped layering: in the 2021 Census, North Macedonia was the fourth most common overseas birthplace recorded in Rockdale, alongside newer communities from Bangladesh and the Philippines. Sydney Airport, just across Botany Bay, has also left its mark: the dredging needed for the airport's third runway, built between 1989 and 1994, and the wider Port Botany expansion disrupted the bay's natural sand flow and damaged the Brighton-Le-Sands coastline that generations of local families had been photographing themselves on for decades. A shoebox of photographs from a family's first years in Rockdale is a record that exists nowhere else, and scanning those photos now, while the images are still legible and the people who can name every face in them are still around, is the only way that story outlasts the original prints.
